Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend booking as early as possible, especially on cruise ship days and during busy travel periods.

We recommend comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and a light jacket or rain layer. Hawaiʻi Island weather can change quickly, especially around Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Slippers are optional for beach stops. Umbrellas and flashlights are provided when needed.

Pickup is available from the Hilo cruise ship port, Hilo International Airport, select Hilo hotels, and Liliʻuokalani Gardens as a designated meeting point.

Most stops involve easy, short walks. Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube) involves approximately a 0.5-mile walk with some inclines, declines, and stairs.

We require at least 24 hours notice for groups of one to five guests, 48 hours for groups of six or more, and 72 hours for private tours for a full refund. “No-shows” will be charged full price.

Yes. For cruise ship guests, we carefully plan the tour around your ship’s schedule and allow plenty of time for your return to Hilo Harbor.

Our shared tours are limited to a maximum of 14 guests, ensuring a more intimate and relaxed experience with personalized attention from your guide.

Our Story

Built from a dream. Inspired by Hawaiʻi.

After spending 3½ years as a professional tour guide, I decided it was time to chase a dream of my own. Taking that step wasn’t easy, but in April 2026, Pualena Tours officially began welcoming guests.

Why start a tour company? Because I wanted to offer something different.

Born and raised in Hilo, I want visitors to experience the aloha spirit that still lives throughout these islands—to see the beauty of Hawaiʻi from a local perspective, hear the stories behind the places they visit, and discover more than what they see from the usual tourist stops.

Pualena Tours was created to share the Hawaiʻi I know and love—the people, the culture, the land, and the places that make this island home.

This is more than sightseeing. This is an opportunity to experience the real Hawaiʻi.
